The birth of turtles is a spectacle of nature!
Led by the NGO EcoAssociados, the event brings together several people on the beach at Muro Alto and nearby to help the baby turtles reach the sea safely.
Turtles hatch their eggs and they hatch in a period of 45 to 60 days, depending on the local climate. The most interesting thing is that the offspring are born at the same time, in almost synchronized movements. From there, the little turtles dig from the bottom of the sand to the surface of the nest and, together, go towards the sea. The birth almost always takes place at night, due to the low temperature in the area and the lower chances of being attacked by predators at that time. To reach the sea, the turtles look for and follow the moonlight, which reflects off the sea.
The idea of accompanying the hatchlings came from the NGO EcoAssociados, which was created in 1998 by a group of Biology students who felt the need to monitor the conservation of sea turtles. Today, the organization already has its own headquarters in Porto de Galinhas and carries out environmental education and monitoring work on the beaches along the coast.
