In Porto de Galinhas, it is possible to learn a lot about marine nature with the Hippocampus Project, aimed at preserving and raising awareness of the natural environment for Sea Horses.
Seahorses are bony fish belonging to the Hippocampus genus. Beautiful and elegant, they are small animals with little mobility, found mainly attached to the roots of mangroves. Therefore, it is easy to find them in the mangrove at the mouth of the Maracaípe River, their natural habitat.
Some curiosities about seahorses are that the male is the one who gets pregnant, with a gestation that lasts only 12 days, and that couples of the species are faithful to their partners. When they form a couple, they stay together for life.
Unfortunately, seahorses are listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as vulnerable or having insufficient data on their biology, due to the low number of specimens.
